Shots were fired from rising superstar Nicki Minaj to an iconic female MC, Lil Kim. This is the hip-hop I love. Rap began on the streets of the Bronx with local MC’s testing their craft in what we call, the cipher. In the early 80’s you would see legendary artist such as Slick Rick battling with Kool Moe Dee to see who was better skilled in their craft. Some MC’s would get demolished in these battles, but it was all for the love of hip-hop. Back in those days it was a clear understanding that what is said on wax never crossed over into the streets. By the mid 90’s, these battles became more intense. Two prominent MC’s, still in their peak, became victim to their own words. It was the first time that the hip-hop industry became shocked at how a misunderstanding on wax can end in blood. Since that traumatic event, battles began to take a backseat. It wasn’t until iconic artists Jay-Z and Nas clashed to emerge the true essence of hip-hop. Every other day, these MC’s would create a diss song that was exclusive on New York radio. During this time I was living in Michigan. I remember going online listening to New York radio to witness history in the making. It felt as if the good times were back in hip-hop. Yet, I still remembered what happen to Tupac and Biggie and hoped that the result of this battle would not end the same. It didn’t. Fans of the culture still talk about the Nas and Jay-Z battle as if it happened yesterday. Now, I’ve yet to hear two well-known and respected female MC’s in a battle. Nicki Minaj has shown that she can rap with the best of them. Lil Kim has proven that she demands the respect of any MC. I hope these two have learned from past mistakes when it comes to battling. I hope that these women can agree to disagree and keep it on wax. There are many hip-hop enthusiasts waiting with popcorn to witness a battle that has never been done.
